first_imgPlan International has started the construction of a modern school in Lontuo, Twah River District near the Liberian/Ivorian Border in Nimba County, a release from the entity has said.Lontuo, a large community of more than 4500 inhabitants, has a single public elementary school in Twah River District which was founded in 1975. The school hosted 445 pupils in academic year 2015. The classes are overcrowded with no chairs, there are no toilet facilities, no libraries or safe drinking water.“We are building this modern school to ease the burden of over-crowdedness, increased enrollment and meet the enormous challenges faced by the community,” said Joseph Nyunkor, Plan International Liberia Nimba Office Manager. The new school will have a laboratory and two libraries for senior and junior students. Plan International will also construct a recreation center, five modern latrines, two safe drinking points and a playground.“Education is the only pathway and policy to sustainable development, economic revitalization and prosperity,” said Nyunkor. The development chairman for Lontuo Town, Oscar D. Wopleh said during the introduction of the contractors to the community that the day was like Christmas Day, “because my dream has come to reality.” “This is a dream come true. All of our neighboring towns in Beo Clan have at least a school building even though they are not modern like the one Plan International is about to construct for us, our children will now go back to school and acquire quality education,” Wopleh said as he celebrated with the school-age children.“Our children,” he said, “Will now have access to a modern school system that will encourage them to be serious with their education. For that, I say many thanks to Plan International Liberia and their partners who provided the money for the construction of the modern school.”Plan International has been working with 326 communities in Liberia since 1982 with programs targeting the areas of Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Education and women’s empowerment, Livelihoods for household economic security, Protection, including in emergencies.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
